Special Needs

Volunteering

Special Needs Services Available:

Adaptive technologies

The library has available an adaptive reader machine which magnifies text to make reading easier for the sight impaired patron. The reader, located on the upper floor in the library, is for use by any patron who would benefit from an enlarged type size.

To contact the library via a TDD, call (708) 562-9364.

Homebound Delivery of Library Materials

Homebound delivery of library materials is a volunteer program to deliver library materials to Westchester residents who are physically unable to come to the Library. Readers may select specific titles and authors OR library staff may select materials based on the individual patron's interests or need. Library volunteers will deliver the materials to the patron’s home. This outreach service, while limited to Westchester residents, is available to patrons with an extended temporary disability or with a long-term disability. Call (708) 562-3573 for more information.

Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH)

Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped is available from Voices of Vision. This talking book center is for use by those individuals with a temporary or permanent disability that prevents them from reading conventional printed materials because of a visual, physical or reading disability. This service center can be contacted by phone at (630) 208-0398 or patrons may visit their web site at www.dupagels.lib.il.us/pages/public.html.

Translators for programs

The Library can arrange for sign-language translators for library programs to assist patrons who are hearing impaired. Please call, visit or write the library to discuss at least 5 days prior to a scheduled program.

Foreign language translators for text or web pages can be accessed via the Internet. Some websites offering this service are www.freetranslation.com, www.systransoft.com, and
babelfish.yahoo.com

Handicapped accessible building and meeting room

The Westchester Public Library is handicapped accessible. There are parking places conveniently located for handicapped patrons. The front door electronically opens for ease of entrance and departure, and the Library’s elevator provides access to all four Library floors for anyone who has difficulty with stairs.
