Library Collections

The Westchester Public Library maintains a diverse collection of library materials in a variety of formats. Innovation in the publishing industry and computer technology has resulted in a variety of new publication formats and non-traditional publishers (e.g. websites). In addition, librarians regularly weed old books that no longer circulate to make room for new items added to the collection.

Books

  • New adult fiction - main floor.
  • Adult fiction – main floor
  • Adult non-fiction - upstairs in Adult Department.
  • New adult non-fiction - upstairs in Adult Department
  • Children’s fiction and non-fiction – Youth Department

Audio books - Books on Tape - Books on CD

  • New adult audio books - main floor.
  • Adult audio books (fiction and non-fiction) – upstairs in Adult Department
  • Children’s audio books - Youth Department
  • Some audiotape materials are shelved with the book collection, as noted in the online catalog.

Compact discs – Music CDs

  • CDs - Adult and Youth Departments.
  • Adult music CDs are shelved by category (Classical, Folk, Jazz, etc).
  • CDs that supplement books are sleeved inside the books.

E-Books / NetLibrary
E-books (electronic books) are books in digital format that can be downloaded and read from a computer.

  • E-books are listed in the online catalog
  • E-books check out for 3 days
  • Patrons can subscribe to NetLibrary to access e-books from the NetLibrary website. (Register at the Library)

Films on VHS and DVD

  • All films are searchable in the Library’s online catalog.
  • Adult feature films - main floor
  • Adult informational films – upstairs in Adult Department, shelved by call number with books in the same subject area.
  • Children’s films - Youth Department.

Foreign Language Materials

  • Shelved in Adult and Youth Departments
  • Books, tapes and CDs for learning a foreign language are shelved in the 430-499’s.
  • Books written in a foreign language are shelved in the 830-899’s and have a bright orange stripe on the spine.

Graphic Novels & Anime

  • Graphic novels are book-length illustrated novels, much like a lengthy comic book.
  • Shelved in Adult and Youth Departments.
  • Anime is a new category of animated film, containing content that appeals to adolescent and adult patrons and these are shelved with feature films.
  • Graphic novels and anime are searchable in the online catalog.

Large Print – Large Type

  • Adult large print fiction - main floor
  • Adult large print non-fiction – upstairs in Adult Department, by call number

Magazines and Newspapers
The Library subscribes to over 200 magazines and newspapers.

  • The current issue of each magazine remains in the Library for patrons to read.
  • Older issues of magazines circulate for one week.
  • Business newsletters and loose-leaf services are shelved in the Business Reference collection.
  • We have several magazines and newspapers on microfilm, some dating back to the 1930’s. Microfilm is shelved in cabinets located on the north end of the Youth Department. Patrons are welcome to use the microfilm reader/printer also located there. The machine will both display and print fiche or film.
  • If a patron is looking for an article in a magazine that is not on shelf or not owned by the Library, the full-text of the article may be available in one of our databases enabling the patron to print a copy, email a copy to their personal email, or read the article online from their home computer (a good option that saves on paper and ink cartridges).
