Our Vision

Westchester Public Library—Connecting People, Ideas and Cultures

Our Mission

The Westchester Public Library promotes lifelong learning and enrichment through access to information, services and a knowledgeable staff in an open environment. We bring people together to stimulate the free exchange of ideas and a sense of community.

Our Library Service Responses

Service Response I: Current Topics and Titles

Goal 1. Residents of Westchester have access to a broad-based, up-to-date collection of materials, representing the best in genres and formats.

Objective 1. To maintain and develop the library collection

Objective 2. To utilize effective marketing tools in promoting the library collection and service to increase public awareness and stimulate use.

Objective 3. To provide opportunities for library employees to enhance their information and advisory skills.

Goal 2. Residents of Westchester receive timely delivery of popular materials to satisfy their recreational and informational needs.

Objective 1. To ensure all new library materials are available for shelf within 2 weeks of delivery

Objective 2. To maintain a schedule of procedures that supports accuracy, prompt turnaround time and quality control.

Objective 3. To achieve a turnover rate of 2.5 for the library’s circulating collection by 2011.

Objective 4. To provide training for library employees to foster a cooperative and productive work environment.

Service Response II: Life Long Learning

Goal 1. Children of Westchester (birth to 8th grade) are welcomed to a dynamic, engaging environment where a wide variety of resources, programs, and activities instill a love of reading and foster use of the public library.

Objective 1. At least 90% of the parents or caregivers who bring preschool children to the library will say the library plays an integral role in helping children develop a love of books, reading and learning.

Objective 2. To provide children with a variety of resources and activities when they visit the library.

Objective 3. Promotion of youth library resources and programs shall occur in schools serving Westchester’s students

Objective 4. The library collection will be clearly labeled and organized for patrons’ ease of use and location of materials.

Objective 5. To provide training for staff to support the enrichment and educational needs of students.

Goal 2. Residents of Westchester have access to library (resources) programs and activities that reflect the Village of Westchester’s cultural diversity.

Objective 1. To conduct quarterly programs and/or craft-related activities which promote cultural understanding.

Objective 2. To provide resources to assist adults who are learning to read (new readers and ESL)

Objective 3. To market and highlight segments of the collection to promote cultural understanding within our community.

Objective 4. Train employees in interpersonal skills to ensure all patrons experience a welcoming and positive environment.

Service Response III: Information Literacy

Goal 1. Residents of Westchester have access to a variety of library resources which support personal, professional, educational and creative pursuits.

Objective 1. To provide information resources that support continuing education and diverse learning styles.

Objective 2. To provide information on current topics and issues.

Objective 3. To provide convenient access to library services and programs

Objective 4. To ensure that staff has the technology resources and competencies necessary for their work.

Goal 2. The Library’s website will provide the residents of Westchester with convenient, remote access to library resources.

Objective 1. To ensure library website is user friendly, informative and intuitive.

Objective 2. To promote library programs and resources via the website

Service Response IV: Commons

Goal 1. Residents of Westchester experience a welcoming, accessible, and clean environment in which to explore the world.

Objective 1. To ensure public and staff areas will be clean, safe and well-lit.

Objective 2. To ensure library services, resources and public safety notices are identifiable and accessible to all patrons.

Objective 3. To ensure all library employees have the interpersonal skills to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for all.

Goal 2. The residents of Westchester will have the opportunity to pursue individual interests and interact with others.

Objective 1. To re-evaluate library layout and furnishings for optimum use
